Motivating Yourself to Write

It's November, and you know what that means. It's National Novel Writing Month!

While I'm not participating this year, I know that it can be a struggle to find time to sit down and write, and to also motivate yourself to sit down and write. It's a struggle.

It's hard to write an entire book in 30 days! But I'm sure you can do it! Writing a book is a huge step, especially if this is your first book, so I thought I would share some ways to inspire/motivate yourself to write. Also, I know it's half way over now but I thought I would just share a few tips on getting yourself motivated to write. Better late than never!

Reading a really good book always inspires me to write, especially if the book is by an author that I admire, because I aspire to write as well as them. Reading a book by an author you admire can challenge you!

Listening to an upbeat song before you write, or during, can get your heart racing and give you that exciting buzz you need to get typing!

Taking a small break can also help motivate you. If you're stressed from life then sitting down to write might not always be what you want to do, but if you go take a walk or just relax at home for a bit, I'm sure you'll feel refreshed enough to get cracking on that book of yours!

Going out in your neighborhood can also inspire you! If you live in a city, you can go out and walk around for a bit, watch people and other things to

Just do it! Sometimes the most helpful motivation is to just sit down and stare at your blank page for a bit until you feel like you're ready to get typing.

Writing Inspiration

A lot of things can inspire me to write.

I can't tell you how many times I've zoned out at the dinner table while thinking about books, writing, more books, random things, etc. I get a lot of my book ideas while I'm zoned out in my own La La Land. I also get a lot of book ideas when I can't sleep at night...When I first started writing, I had to keep a notebook by my bed because I didn't have a phone at the time. The "Notes" App really comes in handy in the middle of the night.

Some of my ideas for things that I want to happen in a current book I'm writing, or a book I plan on writing, also come from conversations. I can be talking to a friend, or a family member and they'll say something that makes a light bulb appear above my head like in a Loony Tunes cartoon.

Music also inspires me. It gets me pumped up and excited to write, especially if the lyrics/beat match the current mood of my story. It's hard for me to write without music. I don't know how some authors go without it. I feel like I'm more focused and in-the-zone.

Sometimes when I read a really good book I can get, what I call, "The Writing Itch." Reading a few pages of my current read can give me the push I need to sit down at my computer and start typing. Though sometimes it can have the opposite effect and make me do this:

My constantly-active imagination makes it easy to come up with random ideas to throw into a book. To let my imagination run completely wild, all I have to do is put on my headphones, and listen to music. If I don't have music, it's difficult for me to write. Very difficult.

Inspiration is all around us, you just have to pay attention. Whether you draw, or paint, or write books, short stories, poetry, etc. there is always something that inspires us. We take in the life and interactions around us and imbed them in our creations.

So go out this weekend and get inspired! Go with that gut feeling you have once you get inspired and follow through with it.

Book Vs. Novel

It's important to know the difference between a book and a novel.

If you're submitting to agents and publishers, you have to write a query letter describing your book, and you don't want to make any mistakes since this letter is the first thing they will read. One of the mistakes that can annoy agents is getting a query letter where a writer describes their book as a "fictional novel."

Novel:

• Novel, on the other hand, is necessarily a book on fiction.
• Novels are only those books that contain stories while books can be stories, poetry, workbooks, etc.
• Novel can be called a subset of book, but vice versa is not a possibility.
• A novel is written to tell a story from the beginning to the end. A book is written to discuss a subject matter. Thus, it can be said that a book and a novel differ from each other in terms of their purposes too.
• A writer of a novel is known as a novelist. Sometimes, novelists are also known as writers.

Book:

• A book can be anything ranging from non-fiction to fiction.
• A writer of a book is called an author or writer.
• Book is also used to speak of a set of blank sheets that are bound together for someone to write in. For example, exercise books.

So, as you can see, there is a pretty important difference between the two. It is easy to get the two mixed up so you should always be careful when describing your book to anyone. Instead of saying, "fictional novel," you could say the genre of your book, followed by "book" or "novel."
All novels are books, but not all books are novels.

Example: " a YA contemporary romance novel" or "a YA contemporary romance book."

Happy writing! <3
